The view from the top of White Horse Hill at Uffington looking down into the Vale of the White Horse has kept me coming back ever since I first scrabbled to the top aged 10.
But it’s Dragon Hill, a small natural chalk hillock with an artificial flat-top immediately below that has fascinated me, especially the legend that clings to it. It’s claimed that it was here, on the summit, that Saint George slew the dragon. A bare patch of chalk upon which no grass will grow is purported to be where the dragon’s blood spilled.
This picture was taken recently just after 5.30am as the sun dashed across the floor of the valley.
In slightly more recent times the hill was used as the setting for the music video of the Kate Bush song “Cloudbusting”.
